Phishing Attacks Against iTunes

Hackers are trying to obtain credit card numbers and other personal information from iTunes users stating that they must update their payment information.

For the first time the iTunes system has become part of attempts to obtain personal information from Internet users by cybercriminals. According to Andrew Lockhard from the computer security company Proofpoint, iTunes users have begun to receive unsolicited e-mails, where they are informed that it is necessary to solve “a problem” in their user account of the popular online music service.

The email includes a link that leads to a page as described would be an update site of iTunes. The site asks users to fill out personal information, including your U.S. social security number, as well as credit card numbers and security code.

“We’re used to see attacks on PayPal, eBay and Citibank. However, we had never seen that Apple is being used, “said Lockhard according to PC Advisor.

According to Lockhard, cybercriminals are trying to exploit the fact that iTunes users are on average younger than users of online banking and eBay.

“Teenagers and young people show some form of confidence and ingenuity to publish their names, age, school and attended on MySpace,” says Proofpoint in its analysis.
