Embarrassing Start For Google’s Rival

Thursday, August 14th, 2008

The frontal attack against Google, which tried to portray the creators of Cuil, has lost its strength due to a serious mistake.

Jonathan Grattage, an expert in quantum physics, was amazed to see the results of Cuil when searching his name. The result is accompanied by a photograph of an American soldier and two men having sex.

The British publication “The Register” requested a comment to Cuil, who replied that the photographs are intended to help users find material that interests them.

In an e-mail, Cuil explains that “offers to users the opportunity to consider the results looking at a picture, instead of having to read 200 words.” Such functionality poses a great challenge, nor Google has succeeded so far resolving this satisfactorily. “We have had progress, but much remains to go,” writes Vince Sollitto, in charge of public relations at Cuil.

Cuil explained that the image of homosexuals was included among the results due to “a massive search activity.”

Both photographs have been eliminated from the search engine, after the consultation made by The Register.

The search engine has also been ridiculed by name. According to the company itself, Cuil is an Irish name for “wisdom”. But according to The Register, Cuil also is a former Irish voice to “back”.

Tuesday, July 29th, 2008

Tom Costello, husband of Anna Patterson, is also involved in the project, along with two other former employees of Google, Russel Power and Louis Monier.

The new search engine has indexed 120 billion pages, according to the creators of Cuil equivalent to three times the database of pages of Google.

However, the big difference is that Cuil, unlike Google, groups search results into categories, giving the user a better overall view.

After making some fairly specific evidence, such as brands or products obsolete Spanish local news, that Google found without difficulty, it is clear that Cuil still has much work to do before they have indexed the entire network.

The company received a capital injection of about $ 33 million, contributed by various investors.

Knol is an abbreviation of Knowledge, which is precisely the idea of the new service, that people with great knowledge on a specific topic share information with others.

“The Internet is huge, but there are multiple sources that are not yet available. Knol allows people to share their knowledge and receive recognition for their contributions. In the same way that the name of a writer is provided on the cover of a book, the author’s name from a Knol also appears on the page, together with possible links to other articles by him. In a Knol, the author can incorporate references include links to related information and interact with readers. Readers, meanwhile, can comment, assigning grades and publish criticism, “writes Juergen Galler, director of product Google search.

Although Knol is an initiative of Google, it is difficult not to conjure Wikipedia.

However, one of the differences between Wikipedia and Knol is that the authors of articles published in Knol can determine on their own terms content others can modify or add. The article in question can also be blocked, making it impossible to edit it.

Google also offers to share advertising revenue with the author of the article. Similarly, the author can decide under what type of license article will be published.

Initially, Google will be difficult to achieve the volume of material published by Wikipedia, whose English edition reaches 2.5 million articles.
